Double Dark
Everyone has a double ... somewhere.
What would life be like if you found out that you had a double, and that double was a prominent, and hunted police detective? What would you do if you were asked to pretend to BE that hunted detective in order to save his life ... and your own?
These stories were written in tribute to a friend of mine several years ago and those that were completed were lost on a cloud storage that no longer exists. As I search my notes and gather my thoughts, I will continue to bring the Double Dark stories back to life ...
double dark: Dark Chance
He’s a dead ringer … and if he doesn’t cooperate, he’ll be more dead than anything else. What choice does he have? He’s not suited to the life. He’s a desk jockey for goodness sake. The man he’s being asked to replace is some kind of icon among his peers. They either love him to distraction … or hate him with equal fervor. Aron has to figure out which it is before they are both taken out.
Double Dark: Dark Death
They’re both still alive. Shocker. Darin’s training is really paying off. Will Darin ever walk again? Will Aron ever get to return to his normal life? A part of him is starting to enjoy the intrigue, but will that and pretended bravado eventually get him killed?
Double Dark: Dark Happenings
How in the world is Aron supposed to handle all of Darin’s social engagements? He’s fighting like heck to keep one of his old flames from finding out that he’s NOT Darin but she’s stalking him. Aron’s starting to think there is more here than just wanting to hook up but the chief thinks he’s just nervous about the op. And Darin told him to trust no one …
Double Dark: Darkness and Light
Still stinging from his last pseudo relationship Aron is thrown when one of Darin’s snitches starts getting physical. Part of him is tempted to bring her in on the op, but Darin is adamant. Trust no one. Aron is starting to get a little sick of everyone telling him what to do all the time. Problem is, he can’t go home yet. Not until they find out who’s trying to kill Darin.
Double Dark: Dark Forces
His cover might be blown … but the man turns up dead before they can find out if he’d passed on the information to Tommy. Now, they have to figure out how to infiltrate the squad where the leaks are reported to be coming from … of course, without tipping any of those officials that Aron isn’t who he says he is.
Double Dark: Dark Pleasures
It doesn’t look like his trouble with women is ending any time soon. Aron is beginning to wonder if Darin ever did anything much more than collecting skirts. Jeez … a hooker? And he’s still trying to keep Malina at bay. Of course, Darin thinks the whole thing is hilarious. Aron wonders how Darin would feel if he just up and quit. It’s not even like he’s officially … official.
Double Dark: Dark Life
Aron is frustrated and questions how they could look and sound so identical when as far as either of them knew, they have absolutely no relationship to each other. Darin agrees and does some digging. He enlists the captain’s assistance to keep it on the DL. He knows Aron is getting fed up with all of the subterfuge. And getting shot at wasn’t something he had signed on for. They have to convince Aron that this is important. That he’s necessary to the safety of the city. Not just the man who shares his face.
Double Dark: Dark Friends
Another close call has Darin trying to get Aron pulled from the op. Sartre won’t budge. He knows the Captain is right, but it is eating him alive. That he can’t do more. He is beginning to feel responsible for Aron, starting to feel like he’s found a brother in more ways than one. Two sides of the same coin … one shiny and one … well, pretty dented and damaged … but still … the same in so many ways it was scary. He digs deeper into the potential corruption at the 403 trying to find a way to unwind Aron from this mess without his having to offer himself in trade to Tommy.

As his skills improve, Aron starts to improvise in even more dangerous ways, and this makes Darin even more crazy than ever. He pushes himself to get stronger and as his patience ebbs, his temper exponentially grows and he starts to alienate the very people he needs to keep on his side. He sees dark days coming and only hopes that he can get back on his feet before Aron does something to get himself killed.
Double dark: Dark Confusion
Sartre knows that the leaks are more widespread than he thought, that several men they had thought were good are on the take and it’s starting to look like it goes all the way to the top. He doesn’t know who he can trust any more other than Darin … and Aron. He’s becoming worried that he is going to have decide soon which one of them he will sacrifice.
double dark: A Dark Beauty
A second bombing nearly takes Darin out. Things are getting more complicated as his face is permanently disfigured. Makeup can work for a while but they know they can’t keep up the charade for much longer. Tommy lets them know that he knows who Aron is and over plays his hand by making a threat that has no teeth. But that doesn’t negate the fact that they really, really need to find and stop him soon.
double dark: Dark of night
Aron’s suspicions appear to be justified when he uses his own initiative and pretends to be getting closer to a couple of the guys he thinks are moles. They can’t believe their luck. The department golden boy! Interested in a little side work. Darin tells him to be careful, but he feels that his words are falling on deaf ears. In Aron’s position, Darin knows exactly what he himself would do. So now, he can only worry.
double dark: darkness falls early
They’ve taken Aron and want Darin to turn himself over. Captain Sartre is against the whole thing but Darin knows that Tommy will kill Aron if he doesn’t go. His rescue attempt nearly fails and he ends up in the same waters that started this whole mess, only this time with his alter ego. His last trip in, his partner lost his life. He can only hope that they can both get out of this with their skin intact.

Captain Sartre isn’t about to lose his best man, and definitely isn’t planning on losing both of them. He calls in several favors and every officer he can muster and goes in guns blazing. Will this end happily for the Dark Team? He was prepared to offer Aron a place in his unit and hopes that he still has the chance to do so after this is all over.
